It’s a sad day for women’s sports fans and real lovers out there: Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe have officially broken up after nearly 10 years together. The athletes shared the news with a joint statement posted to their respective Instagram profiles on Friday, April 17.
“There really is no smooth or easy way to share this news. After a lot of thought, we’ve made the decision to separate as a couple,” they wrote, in part.
The former fiancées continued, “This hasn’t been an easy decision, but it’s one we’ve made together, with so much love, respect, and care for each other. We’ve shared a whole life over the last decade, through big moments and in quiet ones, and that is something we’ll always carry with us.”
Elsewhere in the message, they thanked fans for their support over the years, adding, “We are so grateful to this incredible community that has held us up, welcomed us in, and supported us exactly as we are. So many of you have reminded us, again and again, why loving out loud matters.”
Sue and Megan started dating when they both repped Team USA in soccer and basketball at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. A year later, Sue confirmed their romance during an interview with OUT magazine, where she also came out of the closet.
“I’m gay. Megan’s my girlfriend…These aren’t secrets to people who know me,” the four-time WNBA champion said at the time. “I don’t feel like I’ve not lived my life. I think people have this assumption that if you’re not talking about it, you must be hiding it, like it’s this secret. That was never the case for me.”
In the wake of their split, the couple is also ending their podcast, A Touch More, six years after it started as an Instagram Live show during the COVID-19 lockdown.
